If you’ve ever wondered if government policy and advocacy can actually make a difference, consider this: Despite what you may often read in the papers, state governments are plowing ahead on making energy efficiency a reality. And as USGBC mentioned in a recent report, all states are doing something. That just doesn’t happen if no one is fighting for it.

Accounting for Energy Efficiency: SAVE Act Would Improve Mortage Underwriting, Create Jobs, Save Household Money
On Wednesday, surrounded by leaders from business, construction, and real estate, USGBC joined Senator Michael Bennet (CO) and Senator Johnny Isakson (GA) to announce the introduction of bipartisan legislation to enhance the current mortgage underwriting and home appraisal practices to account for energy efficiency and other sustainable features.

*Knock Knock* That’s the sound of an RA stopping by to ensure you have committed to participating in Campus Conservation Nationals. CCN is the first nationwide electricity and water reduction competition on college and university campuses. Now in its second year, participating schools compete to achieve the greatest possible energy reductions in residence halls.
Last year, 120,000 students saved 500,000 kilowatt-hours in the first annual Campus Conservation Nationals.

Greenbuild is Behind Us…What’s Next for Green Schools?
Last week was USGBC’s annual Greenbuild Conference Expo. Held in Toronto, Greenbuild brought together 23,000 builders, architects, manufacturers, policy makers, educators, advocates and environmental leaders. The Center for Green Schools at USGBC played off of this year’s Greenbuild theme, focusing on “what’s next” in the green schools movement. I wanted to share a few of my highlights with you:

Last week at the annual Greenbuild Conference Expo in Toronto, the Center for Green Schools and United Technologies Corp. held a press conference to announce findings from a new independent study conducted on green schools, as well as initiatives the Center will be taking in 2012. The results of the survey brought light to the fact that Americans are concerned about the status of high-efficiency buildings in our country.
