    What is green building? It’s a simple question that we get a lot here at USGBC, but not one where it’s always easy to find a simple answer. 

    The definition of green building

    Green building is a holistic concept that starts with the understanding that the built environment can have profound effects, both positive and negative, on the natural environment, as well as the people who inhabit buildings every day. Green building is an effort to amplify the positive and mitigate the negative of these effects throughout the entire life cycle of a building.

  • U.S. Green Building Council Selects Grand Rapids Public Schools for Fellowship Program

  • Third Annual Campus RainWorks Challenge: Registration opens Sept. 2

    EPA has just launched its third annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a green infrastructure design challenge for college and university students.

    Student teams, working with a faculty advisor, will submit design boards, a project narrative, and a letter of support describing a proposed green infrastructure project for a location on their campus.

  • USGBC supports key resilience legislation with the new PREPARE Act

    Today, I joined Congressman Matt Cartwright (D-PA) in a press conference call he hosted to introduce his new bipartisan legislation, the PREPARE Act (Preparedness and Risk management for Extreme weather Patterns Assuring Resilience). Joining several co-sponsors, Cartwright introduced the bill in the House on July 31, 2014.

    The PREPARE Act makes us smarter, stronger and safer in the face of these increasing extreme weather events. We’ve all seen the tragic costs these events are having on people’s lives, our communities, and our economy.
