On Nov. 7, 2014, Maple Dale School in Fox Point, Wisconsin made history. The school was the first in the world to earn certification under the LEED v4 Operations and Maintenance: Schools rating system, achieving LEED Gold certification.
Annie Donnelly is the Best of Green Schools 2014 honoree in the Moment for the Movement category. Annie recently authored a children’s book titled ‘Willow Watts and the Green School Wish.’ Her story teaches children about a wide range of sustainability measures from vegetable gardens, to clean construction, to energy efficient heating and cooling.
Three years ago, students from Dunloggin Middle School went on a field trip (we all remember those, right?) to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. They were learning about the Bay’s ecosystem, and while dredging an oyster reef found only one live oyster. The students were concerned and curious, so, along with a few lucky teachers, they researched Maryland’s oyster harvesting history, and began to understand just how important oysters are to the overall health of the Chesapeake Bay.

On Sept. 27, 2014, Green Technologies Dubai, a USGBC Education Partner, carried the message of environmental protection to St. Anthony’s Maha Vidyalaya School, Allogaollewa, in rural Sri Lanka. The co-ed school, which was specially selected by the directors of Green Technologies and serves approximately 300 students from kindergarten to grade 11 was home to the first ever Green Apple Day of Service in Sri Lanka.
The San Diego Green Building Council (SDGBC) and Balfour Beatty Construction recently partnered with John J. Montgomery Elementary School in Chula Vista, CA, to host the 3rd annual Green Apple Day of Service.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, the school was abuzz as more than 75 volunteers, including students, came out to green the campus by performing service work and commencing a year-long Green Schools Challenge.
The end of the year is almost here, and the Center for Green Schools is excited to recognize the “Best of Green Schools” 2014 leaders: people, schools, campuses and organizations making a big difference in their communities.
We have a lot to celebrate this year, and if not for the outstanding efforts of thousands of leaders and volunteers across the world, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
School Districts to Receive Hands-on Sustainability Support
Washington, D.C. – (Oct. 30, 2014) – The Center for Green Schools at USGBC announced today the 2014 recipients of its school district scholarship program. The six selected school districts across the nation will receive year-round support from the Center for Green Schools and a broad network of school sustainability leaders.
