  • Community Support Leads to Green Apple Week in India

    CHF International, a humanitarian relief and development organization, has been working with slum communities in India since 2003. With support from the Caterpillar Foundation and in partnership with the Centre for Social Action (CSA) of Christ University, CHF is improving waste collection and management in the slums of Bangalore and raising the dignity of the waste recyclers, who had been working informally and were often targeted by police as thieves.

    A colleague recently remarked, “In the last ten years, who has changed the most? Look at textiles, automobiles – none has changed as much as the building industry! You can see the influence of LEED in every major market in the world.” I couldn’t agree with her more.

    Documents that reflect a shared vision have sometimes changed the course of history. Usually the document with the greatest impact was influenced by many individuals, from drafters of initial texts to translators and interpreters of national constitutions.

  • Fifth Public Comment Period Now Open for Update to USGBC’s LEED Green Building Program

    LEED v4 draft raises the bar, drives innovation; balances increased technical rigor with market readiness

    Washington, DC – (Oct. 2, 2012) – The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) today announced the opening of the fifth public comment period for the proposed update to its LEED green building program. The comment period, which will close on Dec. 10, enables the building community to view the most recent draft of the rating systems and provide comments where any substantive changes have been made.

    The first annual Green Apple Day of Service has come and gone, and what a weekend it was. More than 1,200 communities around the world took a moment to think differently about where they learn, and participated in meaningful steps towards change. Events and school improvement projects happened in all 50 states, on every continent, and in more than 40 countries. We elevated the discussion around healthy, high-performing schools with positive press, seeing more than 34 million impressions in print, online, television and radio, and over 1,000 social media posts about events.

    This week, I had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, a gathering that brings together leaders from around the world and encourages them to make a commitment to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the global community.
