At the start of each year, millions of us resolve to make renewed commitments to healthy living, time with family, philanthropy, financial responsibility and countless other things that better ourselves and our communities. The most successful New Year’s resolutions I’ve made and kept over the years have been ones that approach a big idea through smaller, achievable milestones. When I decided a few years ago that I wanted to read more I started out, with the goal to read one book each month.
I’ve always been resistant to making New Year’s resolutions. I’m not really sure why. Maybe it seems cliché; maybe I’m annoyed that my yoga classes are now swamped with people who have made resolutions to be more healthy, balanced and zen in the new year. But this year, I am making a new year’s resolution of a professional nature.
This fall, the Center for Green Schools received another wave of impressive applications from around the country for our Trailblazing Teacher Awards – a small grant that we give out to deserving teachers to use toward an environmental initiative in their classroom. The creativity and dedication that shows through each of the educators’ applications is humbling and inspiring (it’s no secret that our staff love to be picked as the review committee for these awards).

With our recent participation in the Green Apple Day of Service and an inspiring Greenbuild show in Philadelphia before us, we’ve been reflecting on emergent trends in the world of sustainability. Of the many conversations out there—the role of partnerships and collaboration, materials transparency, social impact, design and health and resiliency—it’s the social impact, the concept of becoming a restorative enterprise that resonates most with us.
