The continuous evolution of LEED is made possible through hard work, and these committed technical experts undertake this work because they have a passion for USGBC’s commitment to market transformation and they see LEED as the best tool to help us get there. We are all deeply in their debt.

Creating Green, Affordable Neighborhoods: Get Funded, Get Educated, Get Started
The benefits of green building and smarter neighborhood planning and design should be available to everyone, regardless of household income level. We know that green communities foster good health through walkable streets, transit connectivity and proximity to resources. Green building and infrastructure reduce carbon emissions and conserve energy and resources. Collectively, these green neighborhood features drive community costs down and create cohesive, active settings. Shouldn’t everyone have access to green neighborhoods?
Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

USGBC Staff Ramp Up for Green Apple Day of Service
Every month, USGBC hosts an “internal showcase” at the DC headquarters – a chance for staff to learn more about a project, idea or initiative that crosses all departments. Posters and other visuals are created to illustrate the showcase theme and applicable staff are on hand to discuss the concepts with their colleagues. Occasionally, trivia and other games are played to get staff more engaged with the event.

Demand for Green Buildings Exceeds Workforce Supply
This morning, McGraw-Hill Construction (MHC) released its latest SmartMarket Report, “Construction Industry Workforce Shortages: Role of Certification, Training and Green Jobs in Filling the Gaps.” The report, sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council and the American Institute of Architects with support from other contributing partners, finds that 69 percent of architect, engineer and contractor professionals expect there to be a shortage of skilled labor in the next three years.

Parenting’s 2012 Mom Congress Provides Green School Inspiration
Even though by my assessment I was the only non-parent to take the stage at Parenting Magazine’s 2012 Mom Congress Conference, mom delegates from every state in the country welcomed me into their fold with open arms. It was incredibly energizing to meet so many moms who are singularly focused on helping their children succeed at any cost. I met one mother who has to fill out 19 applications a year to be able to send her children to higher performing schools on the other side of the city.
