More than 265,000 students at 109 colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada participated in Campus Conservation Nationals (CCN) 2014, competing to reduce their energy and water use on campus. Collectively, they saved over 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity — equivalent to averting 3million pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere or taking 201 homes off the grid for a year. Students also saved nearly 476,000 gallons of water, or the equivalent of 1.8 million water bottles. With energy and water combined, CCN saved schools an estimate total of $198,000.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! It may not be the real Mexican Independence Day (that’s Sept. 16), but it’s still a great opportunity to take a look at the LEED green building activity taking place in our neighbor to the south.
Over the past decade, building industry professionals have worked to transform our industry — minimizing the negative impacts and maximizing the positive impacts associated with buildings. USGBC’s launch of LEED v4 in November 2013 marked the next step in the transformation journey the buildings industry has been engaged in since the inaugural version of LEED was released in 2000.
After several days of nonstop cold rain here in the District, it was nice to see the sun shining again on the first day of May. But it was even nicer that day to hear about all the award-winning building projects honored by the General Services Administration (GSA) as part of its Design Awards ceremony.
