What came first, the chicken or the egg? Is it the availability of charging stations that has slowed the growth of the electric car, or has it been the sluggish growth of the electric car market that has stifled investment in charging stations? In 1986, two researchers coined the term “excess inertia” to describe this market coordination challenge where inaction spurs inaction and waits patiently for a spark.
While energy modeling analyses have become increasingly important to driving energy performance within the green building industry, the efficiency of transferring the resulting data is still fairly poor. In particular, filling out LEED Online template forms represents significant time for design teams and present opportunities for errors as data is manually sorted and transcribed, sometimes several times throughout a project’s lifespan.
That’s why we built the COMNET Energy Modeling Portal, one of the first LEED automation tools to hit the market.
One of LEED’s greatest strengths is its ability to evolve and improve along with the industry, continuously raising the bar on green building practice.
It’s here!
The LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance Recertification Guidance is now available. This new document is the first of several steps USGBC is taking to establish a clear LEED recertification program for projects that have achieved certification under any version of the LEED for Existing Buildings rating systems.

“LEED certification in buildings benefits the environment and the bottom line. LEED certified buildings in San Francisco and around the country are saving money and increasing their property value while reducing their overall environmental footprint,” says Melanie Nutter, Director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. “Since buildings contribute 53% of greenhouse gas emissions in San Francisco, it is essential that we address inefficiencies in the built environment.
There’s a lot not to like about the USA Today articles written by Thomas Frank and posted earlier this week. To be fair however, there is some to like as well. And, just to put it out there, my list of things that could be better in LEED is a whole lot longer than Tom’s – trying to fix them is why I work here.
