States with a Green Thumb: How Illinois and Other Leading States are Growing Green Building

In 2012, green buildings sprouted up across Illinois like wild flowers (let’s say violets, since we’re talking about the Land of Lincoln.)

In fact, last year the state certified 156 LEED projects, representing 25 million square feet of real estate. In total, the state now has more than 700 LEED certified projects, representing more than 140 million square feet of real estate. That’s the equivalent of 30 Willis Towers.

Each year the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) recognizes excellence in urban design through its Charter Awards. The program recognizes “outstanding architectural, landscape, and urban designs built in harmony with their physical and social contexts.” Winning projects embody the characteristics walkable, sustainable, and vibrant places at all scales – from vast, interconnected urban regions to well-designed buildings and city blocks.

There have been many before us who have provided insight into the formula for creating positive change, paving the road through action and articulating ideas that catalyze and lessons that ignite. Their contributions resonate today and continue to instill in us the feeling and spirit of what’s needed to successfully drive market transformation.

Reflecting on some of these ideas, I’ve put together my recipe of great thinking that in many ways has influenced, guided, propelled or inspired LEED and its remarkable, flexible, market-based approach to creating change.

Happy December, everyone! As a member of USGBC’s Technical Customer Service team, my goal is to help project teams understand LEED programs. In this installment of our “Ask Jeremy” series, I’ll be discussing how Regional Priority (RP) credits work and how to look up which RP credits are available. I’ll also be answering other common questions we receive regarding the RP credit program.

USGBC developed RP credits to incentivize the achievement of credits that address geographically specific environmental priorities.
